Baptism makes one a member of the body of Christ and incorporates one into the Church, sharing in its mission of evangelization. The principal effects of Baptism are purification from all sin, both Original Sin and any personal sin, and the gift of Grace through new birth in the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church baptizes people of all ages.
Sacramental Preparation
Parents are required to participate in a formation/catechesis class to be formed in the meaning of the Sacrament as well as its responsibilities for the baptism of their children. Adolescents and adults are prepared for Baptism through a process called the RCIA/OCIA (Rite/Order of Christian Initiation of Adults). Please contact the parish office if you or your child needs to be baptized.
Godparent Guidelines
Godparents serve a special role in the life of the baptized person. Therefore, parents should choose a godparent not just based on blood relationship or friendship. Rather, a godparent should be a trustworthy witness of the faith who will accept the responsibility of being a part of a godchild’s life for the rest of his/her life, and who will help the godchild attain salvation.
When a child or an adult is to be baptized, he or she must have at least one godparent. It is customary for children to have two godparents. When there are two, one must be male and the other female.
At least one godparent MUST:
- Be Catholic
- Have been baptized, confirmed, and received First Communion
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be an active, registered member of a Roman Catholic parish
- If Catholic, provide a letter from their pastor affirming they are a parishioner in good standing.
